Spanish Lake Conservancy Group

The Spanish Lake Conservancy Group, Inc. (“SLCG”) is a 501(c) non-profit group whose mission is restoring the wetland ecosystem and old growth cypress in the approximately 14,000 acres in Iberville Parish, Louisiana known as the Spanish Lake Basin.

Along with being an important wetland resource it is extremely rich in history. Spanish Lake was first the home to Native American tribe of Bayougoula, a part of the Choctaws. In 1699 the first European explorer discovered Spanish Lake, Sieur de Iberville, and described the lake as “one of the prettiest spots I have seen…”.
