The Death of a Lake

Spanish Lake was first the home to the Native American tribe of Bayougoula, a part of the Choctaws. In 1699 the first European explorer, Sieur de Iberville, discovered Spanish Lake, and described it as “one of the prettiest spots I have seen…” 

Today, for reasons discussed in this Web site, this valuable wetland struggles as a shallow stagnant lake, with little or no timber regeneration, declining water fowl, declining fisheries, declining wildlife, and declining water quality.
